ChipWrights’ multicore CW5631 System-on-Chip will provide developers with a fast and reliable development platform due in part to the integration of the ARM926EJ-S™ processor.
“ARM’s industry-standard processor architecture will enable ChipWrights’ customers to develop embedded systems solutions leveraging any of the industry-standard operating systems and application software with minimal porting required,” says Cary Robins, General Manager at ChipWrights, a provider of high-performance SoC Visual Signal Processor (ViSP) solutions based in Bedford, Massachusetts. “Use of the ARM processor for system level software will free the ChipWrights embedded ViSP cores to do what they do best, which is to solve codec and image processing problems,” adds Robins.
Leveraging the industry-standard ARM926EJ-S processor gives developers the resources necessary to implement complex embedded solutions prolific in today’s portable multimedia devices. The ARM technology is a widely-used and proven development platform that offers a low-risk environment to design, integrate and validate SoC architecture. Plus, it offers the design flexibility and software programmability necessary to meet portable design requirements, and future technological advances.
The ARM926EJ-S processor targets multi-tasking applications, providing complete memory management, high performance, low die size, and low power. ChipWrights will optimize the industry-standard ARM926EJ-S processor as its control processor. The ARM processor will generally be used to run the operating and file systems, and most of the peripheral control software systems. This will accelerate development time and reduce the time-to-market of high-demand portable devices, such as personal media players, and Internet-Protocol cameras.
About the CW5631 SoC
The CW5631 SoC is a high-performance RISC/SIMD/Vector processor that offers an alternative to fixed function devices in imaging applications. The CW5631 is optimized to handle large volumes of streaming data while providing a scalable and programmable platform. The chip combines a CWv16 DSP (RISC processor with sixteen 32-bit parallel processor datapaths), a RISC Serial Application Processor, and the ARM926EJ-S RISC processor for control operations. It also features streaming video input and output ports, Hi-speed USB, I2S/AC97 audio, Compact Flash, Secure Digital/MMC card, and 10/100 Ethernet interfaces, in addition to other SoC features.
